Coimbatore has played a major role among the 20 municipal companies in the urban elections, outside of Chennai.

The western city, which is one of the largest textile centers in the country, saw an estimated 8.39 lakh people voting on Saturday for a total of 15.65 lakh voters, revealing voting details.

Madurai south of Salem west took second and third place with almost 7.26 lakh and 4.7 lakh voters exercising their right.

Tiruchi, despite having a higher voter turnout (approximately 7.8 lakh) than Salem (7.3 lakh), fell to fourth place (4.46 lakh). Compared with Salem’s 64.35% figure, Tiruchi registered only 57.25%. Tiruppur came in fifth with about 4 lakh voters arriving at the polls.

Tambaram, one of the newly formed municipal companies, saw the participation rate of 3.89 lakh, followed by Vellore with 2.71 lakh, Herod with 2.7 lakh and Tirunelveli with 2.66 lakh. Local bodies attended by 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh people were Thoothukudi (1.93 lakh), Avadi (1.85 lakh) and Nagercoil (1.51 lakh).

In terms of the total number of voters in the total number of voters, Karur was the first with 75.84%, but, according to total statistics, his figure was almost 1.42 lakh. The two closest municipal companies in Karur were Kancheepuram and Hosur with 1.42 lakh each. Thanjavur in the central region and Dindigul in the south have registered an exit population of about 1.20 lakh and 1.17 lakh respectively. Those with five-digit numbers were Cuddalore (approximately 98,345); Kumbakonam (83,895); and Sivakasi (75,675).

With 489 panchayats in the city with 7,605 wards going to the polls, Kanniyakumari district tops the list with almost 4.64 lakh voters distributing to 51 city panchayats. Coimbatore was followed by almost 3.56 lakh votes cast for 33 city panchayats and Herod with 3.14 lakh votes cast for 42 city panchayats. The total number of votes cast in the city panchayats spread in 37 constituencies at 44.4 lakh.
