LA PAZ: Alexis Sanchez’s two goals helped Chile beat Bolivia 3-2 on Tuesday to keep their World Cup qualifiers alive.
With two games left on both sides, Chile has moved up to fifth in the 10-team South American team with 19 points.
The top four teams in the category automatically qualify for Qatar and the fifth-place team enters the play-off against the Asian confederation team.
Brazil and Argentina are already eligible and Ecuador in third place is likely to join.
In a tough match in Bolivia’s capital, Sanchez put Chile ahead 14 minutes later but Marc Enoumba equalized eight minutes before the home break.
Marcelino Nunez put Chile back in the lead 77 minutes later and Sanchez added a third with four minutes left.
Bolivia’s top scorer Marcelo Martins pulled one back two minutes later but Chile held on.
Peru, with 20 points, plays Ecuador, who sit in third place with 24 points, later on Tuesday. Brazilian leaders are based in Paraguay and second-placed Argentina are at home to Colombia.
In another night game, Uruguay, with 19 points, will face Venezuela, who are bottom of the team and out of the finish line.
